If you want to draw your IELTS learners’ attention to the importance of APPROPRIACY of lexis in the speaking test, you could try the following fun activity.
Choose a famous historic speech in English on the internet, and read them out to your class with a few words replaced in them with more informal, formal or even slightly pejorative synonyms, then ask if they noticed anything strange.
Read out (parts of) the speech with its original vocabulary, and ask a few guiding questions about the impact the new words, for example
‘We told these truth to be [PRETTY CLEAR]: that all [PEEPS] are created equal…’
Alternatively, you could get your students to do the same in pairs or groups as well.
